Paul is a Certified Public Accountant with a broad background in providing accounting, financial and tax services to clients in a broad range of industries including construction, manufacturing, financial services and oil and gas exploration. Paul has also provided consulting and business advisory services to numerous clients in the selection, operation and maintenance of the accounting information systems.

Paul started his career in accounting in the private sector working for large manufacturing and construction companies in the metropolitan Detroit area. After 5 years of corporate accounting in the Detroit area, Paul moved to Traverse City where he spent nearly 3 years as the Controller of a heavy equipment repair and large electrical contractor.

In 1996 Paul began his career in public accounting in the Traverse City office of Plante & Moran, L.P. where he spent 2 years providing assurance services to clients in the health care industry. In 1998 Paul joined Fuller, Somero & Pahssen, P.L.C., in Traverse City as a Staff Accountant to expand his opportunities to provide tax as well as assurance services to clients. Paul remained with the firm through two mergers, first in December 2002 when the firm merged with Weber, Curtin and Drake, P.C. to become Weber, Curtin & Pahssen, L.L.C., then again in December 2006 when Weber, Curtin & Pahssen, L.L.C. merged with The Rehmann Group. Paul remained with The Rehmann Group until September 2008 when he left to begin his own practice, Paul A. Smallwood, CPA, PLLC.

Paul is a Member of the Michigan Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), with subsection membership in the Tax Practice, Personal Financial Planning (PFP) and Private Company Practice (PCPS) sections of the association.
